It's obviously PMS and not speaking to my computer--no way, no how. Since my printer is an "all in one" it's now an "all in one FAIL". I now have to scan to a flash drive and then download the picture onto my computer. Grrrr... Because I am not big on taking that much time to do anything technical, I have not been posting my art lately. Said art has consisted almost exclusively of zentangle swaps. I LOVE to zentangle--there is a finished project quick! Just my style.

When Kristin at Twinkle Twinkle blog announced she was hosting a "Summer of Color" I knew I had to jump in. A push was needed! Every monday she gives us "the color" and the sky's the limit from there--at least that's my interpretation. Any sort of art, any sort of medium. And the bonus of it all is that there are prizes (I LOVE prizes!!!) in the form of art supplies (I LOVE art supplies!!!).

It's free to join in the fun!

The first weeks color was blue. Hmmmm.... not a color I usually choose to work in. Oh yea, the "push", right. Hey there's that blue page in the journal that I made--sounds like a great place to start.

There are stacks of ephemera in my studio that I don't ever use because "I really should get it color copied"--that way I could use it in multiple pieces of art, right? Well, having put the PRO in procrastination, it never gets copied or put into art. "Push". I opened up one of those children's books with such amazing bright colors and cut right in. What a rush! A sense of freedom! Scary!

Paint, glue, papers, stencils, markers, glitter & dirty hands. So much fun. Thank you to Kristin at Twinkle Twinkle blog for the push. I'm looking forward to 9 more weeks of COLOR.Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13061197620467539128noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7585808461856173600.post-25292942480472418952011-03-05T16:02:00.000-08:002011-03-05T16:02:11.575-08:00Chunky French HouseOne of the swaps I joined was for a "chunky house". These are sturdy little houses decorated for a particular theme. As I was getting a bit bored with ATC's, I thought this would be a fun challenge. It was a challenge for sure! The cardboard I used was very curly and I had a hard time keeping it flat even with medium/paint/gesso on both sides. We were asked to do 2 French Themed houses for one partner. I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be linked together, but I like them that way.
Yea! Now what to do with them??? There are quite a few art journal pages floating around the studio and I have been thinking of ways to bind them into a journal. Anyway, here are the completed pages from class.
What a great day at Teesha's Art Annex in Seattle. I am so inspired to do more collage. Teesha's art is so fun and whimsical with lots to explore in each piece. She had us moving from the moment we stepped in the door. She loosened us up with some round-robin style collage with our table mates. Then a simple collage scene. She taught us some great techniques and explained to us what her favorite tools are and why. Teesha also shared some of her own collage pages and some fun imagery for us to use in our own art. Do I sound enthusiastic? I am!

Here are a couple of the projects that I worked on while at the class. I have not filled in the journaling part--that will happen another day.
Given the swap theme, I just had to put all those shiny little foil wrappers to good use. Here's the run down:

background (stripe) is the inside of an envelope (from a bill, of course!) painted red

foil and "Kisses" banner is pretty obvious :-)

the little cherub girl is a copy of my Great Aunt Ora's Valentine stash--i'm guessing from the 1930's

The hearts are made from some old book pages painted and tied on with pearl cotton

I love doing these mini art pieces. For these Valentines, I copied some of my Great Aunt Ora's old cards. They are so adorable, I had to find a way to share them. The colors did not scan and print well--I'll have to figure that out another day. "Yes" glue made these ATC's easier to work with--as opposed to the Mod Podge I've been using. Also less warping of the card. I did coat the card after it was complete as I wanted a shiny finish. Not sure that is the way to go--more experimenting needed!
Watercolor crayon & silver acrylic mixed for the background and a bit of stamping thrown in. The moon is torn watercolor paper from some stash. A bit of golden metallic paint for moon glow and Derwent Inktense (love them!) pencils for shadow. Not due until 12/3. I was thinking how totally early I was mailing this out--but that is this coming FRIDAY. December already!
The next ATC swap was "Snowman". It was fun making the little guy. When it came time for eyes, I just did see him with eyes. Maybe he's asleep for the night? I hope my swap partner won't mind! Same recipe as the moon ATC although there is some glitter glue stars on the one.Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13061197620467539128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7585808461856173600.post-25126226573954186722010-11-25T12:27:00.000-08:002010-11-25T12:27:26.654-08:00Butterfly Swap from WillowWillow does a monthly ATC swap that I joined. The Butterfly theme was fantastic. I received my 2 Butterfly ATC's from my partner, Anne. They are adorable.

I am really getting into this ATC swap thing. Such a great way to share art!

The green ATC has a watercolor background. After it dried completely, I quickly painted it with mod podge and did a transparency transfer of the butterfly. The wording was printed on yupo and then added with mod podge. Some gel pen dots, a bit of glitter glue bling and some of my favorite ribbon to finish.

I like the simplicity of it.
I used an old book and cut free form houses & roofs. Then decided they needed some white wash. Really? I actually painted all the little pieces. They, of course, stuck to my work surface (still there!). Then I had to go back and do the smart thing--paint the pages and then cut house shapes :-)
I also did the landscaping. Painted the inside of envelopes--you know, the type you get your bills in. They have the first layer of texture already down. These were painted with acrylic wash then stamped with gesso.

What? I have to wait for them to dry? But I'm not so good at waiting...

Next, a bit of color for the houses (and more waiting...)

Maybe another coat of fixative? The watercolor crayons are coming up and the paper is starting to disintegrate. Hmmm... that helped a bit. More decoration with markers & gel pens. How about a little mod podge to really get it all glued down? That helped--but it also smears the gel pens and the 'permanent' marker.

Finally. A finished product that I really like!
Utube has so many fun videos on art. I can't remember the name of the woman who did a demo on the little house, but it sparked my interest. I also had read something about value in keeping your art interesting to look at--brights, lights, darks. The white gel pen helped.
The theme is "Home". We all have 10 partners to send an ATC to by Jan. 3, 2011. My parters will be getting theirs a bit early as I am almost done (I think...). I one partner in Germany and one in Australia as well as across the USA.
This could be addicting!
I know there is more too it, something about "like the trees dropping their leaves..." The leaf prints were made as samples while I was teaching for Renaissance School at Camp Waskowitz outside of North Bend. The kids enjoyed the project and I loved helping them out--I'm only sorry that the teacher, Ms. Kane, broke her foot in order for me to get the opportunity. Back to the process... the leaves are done with a watercolor & dish soap printing method. Then I tore them from the original sheet and adhered them to the background. The background was made from a left-over paint wash and then rubbings with watercolor crayons. Added a bit of graphite water soluble pencil around the leaves and then sprayed with fixative. I tried to do the wording with the graphite pencil as well, but didn't feel dark enough so I went back in with a marker. Final touch was white gel pen dots. It still doesn't feel quite finished, but it probably will be!Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13061197620467539128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7585808461856173600.post-30799472534835343632010-06-26T19:39:00.000-07:002010-06-26T19:39:04.253-07:00Women in ArtKarenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13061197620467539128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7585808461856173600.post-81907562504773411932010-06-26T17:30:00.000-07:002010-06-26T18:27:25.101-07:00Jodi Ohl's Art Journaling Class, using collage...

This was not my favorite challenge--probably because is was MORE of an actual challenge! I wanted to use this picture of Elise and some of the antique doilies from my Great Aunt Ora. I liked the background, but struggled to get the picture to look a bit less realistic without making my sweetie look like a psycho. Gel medium is not the adhesive to use with a project you want to draw over. Next time I'll use more text boxes instead of just writing on the page. The big "E" is also from my Great Aunt Ora's stash--it's an iron on pattern for embroidery.Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13061197620467539128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7585808461856173600.post-8769241040445317112010-06-26T17:21:00.000-07:002010-06-26T18:26:10.303-07:00Jodi Ohl's Art Journaling class, using acrylics...

Then we moved on to acrylics. I really like the different techniques she taught to get depth in in the background. She gave us several options on how to journal on the page. I chose the word "Choices". A lot of the journaling did not show up on the scan, but there is some quotes on choices. This is my "meditative" word for the year. Trying to break some habits and make better choices.

This is another page done with acrylics. I have not done any other journaling on this one yet, but I really like the color combo. Once it dried, see if there were and shapes that popped out. Use the shapes to make designs ( I saw a fish) or just outline them. Make some journal boxes and do some doodling. Fun project.
